Regulations

The Demerit/Detention System

Any serious offense can result in a student being immediately dismissed from Ss. John Neumann and Maria Goretti High School.   For minor offenses, single detentions will be issued.  For more serious offenses, demerits and detentions will be issued.  For each demerit received, two points will be deducted from a conduct grade of 100.  The conduct grade will be renewed at the beginning of each semester.  Demerits accumulate throughout the entire year. 

• 20 Demerits - Suspension, Parent Meeting, the loss of ALL privilages for one week (participation in athletics, attendance at mixers and class dances, etc.).
• 32 Demerits - Conduct failure, suspension, the loss of ALL privilages for two weeks.  Student will be reviewed for possible dismissal from school, parent meeting, mandatory attendance at Discipline Summer School, student will be reviewed for possible dismissal from school by the administration.
• 40 Demerits - Conduct failure, 3rd suspension, loss of ALL privilages for a minimum of three weeks.  Student will be reviewed for immediate dismissal from school by the administration.  If re-instated, parent meeting and discipline summer school.

Detentions

There are two sessions of detention held on every regular school day.  Missing a detention is considered a major violation of the school code of conduct.  Detentions are to be served the following day it has been issued.  No exceptions are made since there are two sessions:

1. Morning Detention begins at 7:00 a.m.
2. Afternoon Detention begins at 2:30 p.m.
3. Detentions are held Tuesday through Thursday in the School Auditorium.

Lateness

A student who is not in their class seat at the second bell is late and needs a late pass, procured at the desk located at the Tenth Street door.  Students who are 10 minutes late will receive 1 detention.  Students who are more than 10 minutes late will receive multiple detentions.  If late for any class other than first period, the teacher will issue the student a late detention.  In case of inclement weather, responsible students will make alternative travel plans (e.g. leave home earlier or traveling by a different route to insure arrival at school on time).  The office of the Assistant Prinicipal for Student Services will handle all Neumann/Goretti Bus problems that may arise.

Loitering

Students are only permitted to stand outside the school on any sidewalks adjacent to the building.  Any student found loitering on anyone's property, or outside any store will be issued dermerits/detentions.

Smoking

Ss. John Neumann and Maria Goretti is a smoke free school.  If a student is caught smoking either in school or on school property (including sidewalks adjacent to the school) he/she will be given detentions and fined $10.00.  Smoking is prohibited at any school related functions, on school buses, public transportation, or within the areas bounded by Morris and Mifflin Streets, 9th and 12th Streets.

Lost and Found

The school is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.  All lost articles are to be taken to and reclaimed at the Office for Student Services.  Articles not recovered from the lost and found within one week of the close of school will be donated to charity.

Universal Search Policy

To protect the safety and welfare of students and school personnel, school authorities may question and search a student, his/her personal effects, lockers and vehicles used by the student and may seize any illegal, unauthorized, or contraband materials discovered in the search. 

Searches conducted by school authorities may include, but not limited to, utilization of certified drug detection dogs or any devices used to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the school population.  A student's refusal or failure to permit such searches and seizures as provided in this policy will be considered grounds for disciplinary action.

Cell Phones

The school is not responsible for lost, stolen or loaned cell phones.

Cell phones/electronic devices (I Pods) will only be returned 24 hours after they have been confiscated to a parent or guardian.  The student will receive demerits and detentions any time a cell phone/I Pod has been confiscated.  Cell phones or I Pods are not to be used or visible once a student enters the building until the time they exit the building.  As a school community,  we would prefer that students leave cell phones and pagers at home.  However, we recognize that many parents feel their children need these items due to safety or work situations.  In fairness to both the school and parents' wishes, we insist upon the following.  The student must keep the phone in a secured locker from the time they enter the building to the time they leave the building.  The phone must be in the off position.  No student is to display or carry a cell phone on his or her person or in a handbag at any time during the school day.  The school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or loaned cell phones.  Students are never permitted to make or receive phone calls from the school building unless they have the consent of an administrator.  If a student or parent needs to make emergency contact, they should do so through the Office of the Assistant Principal for Student Services.  Any student who displays a cell phone during school hours or while they are in the building will have their phone confiscated and turned into the Assistant Principal for Student Services.  Any student whose phone rings, makes a phone call, or receives a phone call during school hours will receive demerits/detentions and have his/her cell phone confiscated.  Cell phones will only be returned to a parent or guardian!
